Kevin Warsh used Friday to put inflation ahead of a visibly weakening labour market, and the market took him at his word: pricing moved to roughly a two-thirds probability of a September hike. Christopher Waller then argued the opposite case, pointing to encouraging disinflation in recent prints and saying he favours holding rates in September if the August figure confirms the trend. Yields eased on that, and Bitcoin briefly traded at US$80.1k, having begun the run in the low US$60ks. Our read is that the hike pricing is too aggressive, both because labour data has softened and because the committee is now openly divided over which half of its mandate to weight.<\/p>\n\n
Around US$100M left digital asset ETPs in the hours after Warsh spoke. This week the money has returned, with US$1B in week to date, against US$2B the week before and US$2.9B the week before that, the strongest week of the year. The useful point for advisers is what the round trip is not. It is not a client base losing interest in the asset class, and neither week reflected a changed view on Bitcoin itself. It is the same allocators repositioning around a single rate decision, on a two-week horizon.<\/p>\n\n
Iran remains the variable that can undo Waller’s case, because it feeds oil and therefore inflation expectations. We continue to expect a resolution of some kind, helped by political pressure building ahead of the US midterms, but the tail is not trivial. China has been rationing consumption, which has kept a lid on the price. If Chinese demand normalises while supply is still disrupted, a fresh spike pushes inflation up and hardens the case for tightening. That is the clearest near-term downside for the asset.<\/p>\n\n
Behind the week’s noise sits a repricing of US sovereign risk. Ten-year yields are still around 4.7%, and the market is asking a materially higher yield to hold Treasuries against a debt-to-GDP ratio near 122% and heavy issuance still to come. Attempts to hold the long end down have not worked, and pressing harder shortens the average maturity of the debt, which makes the fiscal position more sensitive to the Fed rather than less. This is the mechanism behind Bitcoin trading alongside gold: both benefit when investors want assets no government issues. A genuine loss of confidence in Treasuries remains a tail scenario, and it is the one that matters most for the asset.<\/p>\n\n
Two dates carry most of the information. The August inflation print tests Waller’s disinflation case, and the September meeting shows which mandate wins. Until Iran resolves or Treasury confidence deteriorates further, the range holds, which argues for sizing to a range rather than to a breakout. One signal runs the other way: blockchain equities took roughly US$27M this week and more than US$100M over the month, with strong sector performance. Against cooling direct crypto flows, that looks like money rotating inside the theme, towards infrastructure and tokenisation revenue that does not depend on where Bitcoin prints this quarter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
