The combined market capitalisation of proof-of-stake networks exceeds $695 billion, with Ethereum, Solana, BNB Chain, Cardano, Polkadot, and newer entrants like Hyperliquid all relying on staking to secure their networks. For advisors, understanding how staking works\u2014and how it differs across networks\u2014helps explain an increasingly common feature of digital asset products.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is staking?<\/h2>\n\n<p>At its core, staking involves locking tokens to support network security. Rather than using computational power to validate transactions (as Bitcoin does), proof-of-stake networks select validators based on their economic commitment. Validators who behave honestly earn rewards; those who don&#8217;t risk losing a portion of their stake through penalties called slashing.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the staking networks?\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n<p>Ethereum, BNB and Solana represent three of the largest PoS networks by market capitalisation, each with distinct staking mechanics and reward structures.<\/p>\n\n<p>Ethereum transitioned to proof-of-stake in September 2022. Validators must deposit a minimum of 32 ETH to participate directly. The network selects validators randomly, with selection probability weighted by stake size.<\/p>\n\n<p>Unlike Ethereum, Solana has no protocol-level minimum for delegation\u2014holders can stake any amount by delegating to an existing validator. Rewards are calculated and paid each epoch, roughly every two to three days. Meanwhile, users of BNB chain delegate their tokens to validators and receive daily rewards, currently around 2.4% annually. The minimum for direct staking is 1 BNB, with a seven-day unbonding period. The model prioritises speed and low costs, though with fewer validators than other major networks.<\/p>\n\n<p>As mentioned above, proof-of-stake is used by the majority of blockchain networks, such as Hyperliquid, Cardano and Polkadot amongst the most established ones.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/coinshares.citywire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Main-proof-of-stake-PoS-networks-by-market-capitalisation-CH.png\" alt=\"Main proof-of-stake (PoS) networks by market capitalisation\" class=\"wp-image-2058\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to participate to staking<\/h2>\n\n<p>For individual investors, direct staking presents barriers. Ethereum&#8217;s 32 ETH minimum (approximately $80,000) and technical requirements make solo validation impractical for most. Several pathways exist to access staking returns without these hurdles.<\/p>\n\n<p>Staking pools allow participants to combine holdings and share rewards proportionally. Liquid staking providers issue tradable tokens representing staked positions, maintaining liquidity while earning rewards. Exchange-traded products incorporate staking mechanics directly, enabling investors to access both price exposure and staking returns through regulated vehicles tradeable via existing brokerage accounts.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Staking: what are the risks<\/h2>\n\n<p>The risks warrant careful consideration. Validators can be penalised for poor performance. If a validator goes offline or fails obligations, the network deducts from its stake\u2014an actual loss, not merely a missed reward. More serious infractions trigger &#8220;slashing,&#8221; resulting in substantial stake forfeiture. Solana&#8217;s unstaking period typically takes two to three days; Ethereum&#8217;s can extend longer during periods of high withdrawal demand.<\/p>\n\n<p>For investors accessing staking through products rather than direct participation, counterparty and operational risks replace these direct penalties. Infrastructure quality, provider reliability, and reward distribution transparency all become relevant considerations.From a portfolio construction perspective, staking transforms PoS assets from pure price exposure into something with yield characteristics. The reward compounds over time, potentially enhancing long-term returns.<\/p>\n\n<p>Regulated products now offer transparent staking mechanisms with institutional-grade custody.<\/p>\n\n<p>Staking represents a fundamental characteristic of proof-of-stake networks. For portfolios with existing or planned allocations to Ethereum, Solana, or other PoS assets, understanding this mechanism helps advisors articulate both the opportunity and the associated
